Insect damage in turfgrass can be difficult to diagnose as many insects cause similar types of nondescript damage (think: “yellowing or browning irregular patches”). Use the following series of questions to identify insect issues in turfgrass based on distinctive damage each insect causes. This key will not serve as a catch-all for turf insect problems and some unique circumstances may occur where an exception will not fit this key. However, this key will provide general identification information for insects (and mites!) that you would expect to see in managed turf settings.
