Vacuum Sampling
Vacuum sampling is best used for small, lightweight insects that are active at the soil surface or in the foliage.
How to conduct a vacuum sampling:
Step 1. Purchase a leaf blower that has the ability to reverse suction flow.
Step 2. Place a custom-made cloth bag onto the shaft of the leaf blower, secure with a circle clamp, and place the bag inside the hollow shaft.
Step 3. Turn the leaf blower on and sweep over the turfgrass surface.
Step 4. When finished, turn of the power, remove bag, and sort through the collected material.
Step 5. Count the number of insects within the sample and repeat as necessary.
